Patrici Lewis, U.S.-Ontario

God called me to become an SNJM Associate. I felt so compelled to respond because it was my way of being totally integrated with what meant so much to me and my local community. I wanted to do more, to be more, and to officially be a part of the SNJM Family – wholeheartedly by committing to dedicate and be accountable for all that is set forth to better the world through God’s help and blessings.

I asked my late Sister Kay Burton, “What can I do to be a member of the SNJM’s or stay connected in a formal way – if that’s such a thing since I’m not Catholic or a part of any of their academic institutions?” She smiled at me and said, “Well you don’t have to be either. You can become an Associate in which you have all the qualities of one.” I was not familiar with the “Associate” term, but I had read it in literature and heard about it on occasions. Sister Kay and I discussed the associate commitment, and it all registered nicely. I was excited and Sister Kay initiated the process.

I recall feeling quite in awe and fulfilled at my Initial Associate Commitment Ceremony. That feeling is still with me today. In my tenure, I have learned so much more about the SNJM organization. I have met so many friends whom I did not realize were Associates and others who are doing great things in their local areas. This has increased my fondness and commitment. The SNJM mission is infused with wisdom and many opportunities for one to grow and engage in selfless endeavors. I was able to collaborate with those who support anti-human trafficking actions, aid refugees and immigrants, and serve the homeless. I am also using my gifts and resources to encourage the Jonestown, Mississippi Community.

I was confident that once I became an SNJM Associate, others would follow. Currently, there are two SNJM Associates, and two Associate Candidates from Jonestown. Together, we can inspire others not only in Jonestown but in Tutwiler, Mississippi and throughout the Mississippi Delta. The SNJM charism will live on. I am fortunate and blessed as an SNJM Associate to share love and the charism with others. It is evidently prosperous.
