Encouraging and recognizing

Expo – Educational mission 4. Microscope

From the very beginnings of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) in 1843, the religious have been keen to reward students’ efforts. These awards are a source of motivation and recognition. They are intended to signal academic success as much as good attitudes: punctuality, politeness, diligence with homework…

This system of rewards was developed to indicate, for example, a pupil’s role in a class (President) or membership in a pious association, such as Enfants Jésus, Anges Gardiens, Enfants de Marie, etc. The many examples preserved in the archives show that these rewards were used throughout the Congregation, in Quebec, Canada, the United States and Lesotho.

Many medals are bilingual. Others are stamped with the SNJM seal, mentioning the honor, the name of the school and that of the student. Medals can be worn as pins or pendants, like those on display.

  • 1880-1884. Holy Name of Jesus Boarding School, Longueuil. Graduation.
  • Since 1881. Academy of the Holy Names-Mother Mary Rose Society-Province of New York 1911.
  • Hochelaga Convent. Advanced Studies Honors
  • Inst. Des SS.NN. De Jésus et de Marie, Disraeli. Gold medal – Honors – Music

Medals are also offered by schools to mark anniversaries. The Congregation itself has distributed medals bearing the effigy of the founder or with the SNJM logo.

In addition to medals, there are also a number of certificates and, of course, diplomas. At the end of each school year, an official graduation ceremony is held to celebrate the achievements of all students, and the honors bestowed on some. It’s a festive and memorable moment for all students and teachers.

While the emphasis is on praising young people for their various exploits, it should be noted that many SNJM religious have also distinguished themselves over the years, particularly for the nature of their commitment. The award of the King of Lesotho’s medal (Order of Mohlomi-For achievement |Lefebvre, Julienne, SNJM [Michel-Archange]) to Sister Julienne Lefebvre, as well as papal recognition and honors from civil society, are tangible examples.
