“… take, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:10)
From the earliest centuries of Christianity, this invitation has been the source of veneration for the saints of God, witnesses to the true faith. The Church recognizes the merits of these men and women, whose lifelong fidelity to Christ makes them inspiring role models. Keeping their memory alive contributes to the comfort of pilgrims.
Praying to the saints and blesseds calls for faith in a spirit of communion that unites the realities of heaven and earth. The Catholic doctrine of the communion of saints refers to certain biblical teachings. It is emphasized that intercessory prayers are directed to holy persons capable of interceding because of the unity of the Body of Christ.
Asking for the intercession of saints has nothing to do with magic, witchcraft or superstition. Rather, it’s about trusting in their benevolent intercession to help us cope with earthly situations.
