International Girls’ Day

Unicef uses International Girls’ Day to launch its annual campaign for girls’ rights and to make their voices heard. The theme for this year 2020 “My Voice, our equal future” is an invitation to “reinvent a better world” inspiring girls, “a world where we count on them and build on them”.

Sharing stories of teenage girls and organizations that are contributing to positive social change is one of the activities promoted during this campaign. Work is also continuing to raise awareness of the international community’s nine-point action agenda, which includes:

  • Promote and protect the rights of girls and raise awareness of their needs and potential.
  • Eliminate discrimination against girls in education, skills development and training.

These actions are in line with the thinking of Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher who, from the first hours of the foundation of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) in 1843, had the formation of young girls at heart. She believed that girls had an important role to play in the family and in society.
