International Day for Tolerance

“Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.” – Declaration of Principles on Tolerance

It was in the wake of the United Nations International Year for Tolerance that the UN General Assembly created this international day on December 12, 1996. During its 50th anniversary (1995), the United Nations adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance.
