Activities (no fee) offered on September 29 by SNJMs – Journées de la culture (Cultural Days)

Discover 175 years of history and the richness of a written heritage by attending a public reading entitled Archives Aloud

On Saturday, September 29, in the context of the Journées de la culture (Cultural Days), the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) are offering two presentations of a public reading, Archives Aloud, which includes projections and musical interludes. This activity invites you to discover the richness of the SNJM heritage by immersing yourself in the world of 175 years of SNJM history, as preserved in written archives.

This first major public reading, entitled Educate to liberate, is perfectly in line with the theme of the 2018 Journées de la culture, which puts words in the spotlight. In fact, listening to the reading of texts from the archives is an opportunity to be enchanted by the resonance of the words, to absorb all their meanings and to be captivated by the stories they tell.

The various archival excerpts which will be presented testify to the lives and commitments of sisters in several spheres of action. The readings will help reveal the deep and ever-present values of the congregation, which, inspired by its foundress Marie-Rose Durocher, has been responding to the needs of people since 1843, empowering them to reach their full potential.

The presentations, each lasting approximately one hour, will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Longueuil Convent Chapel. Please reserve as soon as possible, since the number of seats is limited.

Open House at Longueuil Convent and Guided Outdoor Tour

In the spirit of these Journées de la culture, SNJMs invite the public to take advantage of the Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to visit the historical rooms where the foundress lived, the original chapel, the Foundation House (the former parish school) and the museum dedicated to the pioneers of the first teaching congregation of women religious founded by a Canadian.

It will also be possible, by means of a guided tour of the archival exhibition, Educate to liberate, to deepen the knowledge acquired during the public reading. Lastly, visitors who would like to discover more about the rich heritage buildings on this site, which is at the heart of the foundation of the City of Longueuil, can register for the outdoor thematic tour entitled “If these walls could talk,” offered at 3 p.m., by reservation.

To learn more about these activities (no fee) that will take place at 80, rue Saint-Charles Est, Longueuil, or to register for the various approximately hour-long presentations which require reservations, call 450 651-8104, extension 0, or send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. The contribution of SNJMs to the activities of the Journées de la culture is carried out in collaboration with the City of Longueuil. It is part of the 175th anniversary activities of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
