Immerse yourself in the history of a heritage jewel: the Longueuil Convent

Activities on August 4 and 5 at SNJMs in Longueuil - Archeology Month in Quebec

As a part of the activities of the Quebec Archeology Month, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) are offering a premiere of an animated presentation with projection on the evolution of this historical building erected around 1740.

Supported by archival documents, this original presentation retraces the various vocations and transformations of this building where hundreds of sisters have worked and thousands of young women have studied over the years. Two complimentary presentations are scheduled: Saturday, August 4, at 10:30 a.m., and Sunday, August 5, at 2 p.m. Make reservations soon because the number of places available is limited.

Guided outdoor tour and open house

People wishing to acquire more information will be able to continue their exploration by taking the outdoor thematic tour: ‘’If the Walls Could Speak,” presented at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, and on Sunday, August 5, (Reservations required). This guided tour allows visitors to discover the wealth of the heritage built in this section of Longueuil and the architectural particularities of the buildings.

We also tell the story of the École de la Fabrique (parish school), which became the SNJM Foundation House. In addition to describing the details of the oldest house in the area, we note the traces of the Saint-Antoine Creek which no longer exists. In case of rain, all will be presented indoors in a conference with projection.

In addition, the Convent of Longueuil, which eventually became the Congregational House, will be open to the public all weekend, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed between noon and 1 p.m.). Visitors will be able to explore the sites and to discover the museum dedicated to the foundresses of this international congregation, the original chapel, the historical rooms, as well as the Foundation House. Also of interest is the SNJM 175th Anniversary exhibit entitled, ‘’Educate to Liberate.’’

We note that this is the third year that SNJMs participate in the Archeology Month activities organized by the City of Longueuil at the parc de la Baronnie. This year’s participation is part of the 175th anniversary of the first teaching congregation of women religious founded by a Canadian, Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher.
